Summary of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) In September 2015, the United Nations established the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a comprehensive roadmap to address humanity's most urgent challenges and foster a just, sustainable future . Intended to be achieved by 2030, these interconnected objectives serve as a universal call to action to improve global lives while safeguarding the environment . Social and Human Development Goals The agenda prioritizes the eradication of extreme poverty (SDG 1), which is defined as living on less than $1.25 per day; as of 2022, 9.2% of the population still lived in these conditions, a challenge worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic . SDG 2 targets the elimination of hunger, which affected nearly 828 million people in 2021, through sustainable agriculture . Health and well-being (SDG 3) remain critical, particularly after 15 million deaths from communicable diseases were recorded in 2020 and health inequalities were exposed by the pandemic . Education (SDG 4) and gender equality (SDG 5) are also central, though progress is threatened by digital divides and the fact that women still earn 20% less than men globally . Economic and Infrastructural Advancements Sustainable development requires inclusive economic growth (SDG 8) and the creation of high-quality employment, especially following a 13.6% increase in youth unemployment in 2020 . SDG 9 focuses on resilient infrastructure and innovation, noting that the global digital economy reached $5.9 trillion in 2021 . However, reducing inequality (SDG 10) is a major hurdle, with the wealthiest 1% of the population controlling over 40% of the world’s wealth . Furthermore, with 68% of people expected to live in urban areas by 2050, SDG 11 emphasizes the need for sustainable urban planning and affordable housing . Environmental Stewardship and Climate Action Environmental goals include ensuring clean water and sanitation (SDG 6) for the 2 billion people currently lacking it, and accelerating the shift to renewable energy (SDG 7), which provided 29% of global electricity in 2020 . Urgent action is needed to combat climate change (SDG 13), as global temperatures have already risen by 1.1°C . This is coupled with the need for responsible consumption (SDG 12) to reduce the 368 million tons of annual plastic production, and the protection of biodiversity below water (SDG 14) and on land (SDG 15) where 25% of species are currently at risk of extinction . Governance and Global Collaboration The success of the 2030 Agenda relies on promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), which is challenged by serious corruption issues in two-thirds of the world's countries . Finally, SDG 17 stresses that these goals can only be realized through effective partnerships between governments, the private sector, and civil society
