Summary of SDG 3: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-being for All at All Ages
Dr.Chonlatit Urairoekkun (2026-05-13)
Overview and Interconnectedness SDG 3 is a core pillar of the 2030 Agenda, emphasizing that "Health for All" is not just a sectoral goal but a foundation for healthy economies . Achieving this goal depends heavily on "determinants of health" from non-health sectors, including Clean Water (SDG 6), Climate Action (SDG 13), Quality Education (SDG 4), Decent Work (SDG 8), and Sustainable Cities (SDG 11) . Current Status and the Impact of COVID-19 The world is currently not on track to achieve Goal 3 . The COVID-19 pandemic ravaged global health, reversing nearly a decade of progress in life expectancy . Global life expectancy, which rose to 73.1 years in 2019, plummeted to 71.4 years by 2021, returning to 2012 levels . Key Indicators and Progress Maternal and Child Health: While under-5 deaths reached a historic low of 4.9 million in 2022, the rate of progress has slowed significantly . The global maternal mortality ratio remains stalled at 223 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is more than three times higher than the 2030 target of 70 . Communicable Diseases: Significant strides were made pre-pandemic; for instance, AIDS-related deaths fell by 52% since 2010 . However, progress is now threatened by inequalities, with malaria and tuberculosis deaths increasing compared to pre-pandemic levels . Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health: Prior to 2020, NCDs were the leading cause of death globally . There is an urgent need to reduce premature mortality from NCDs by one-third and strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse . Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Health Workforce Access Gap: Approximately 4.5 billion people lacked essential health service coverage in 2021 . Financial Hardship: Out-of-pocket health spending affected 2 billion people in 2019, with 344 million people being driven deeper into extreme poverty due to health costs . Workforce Shortage: There are stark disparities in health worker density; low-income countries have only 1.1 doctors per 10,000 people, compared to 35.6 in high-income countries . Environmental and Social Challenges Air pollution remains a critical threat, causing an estimated 4.2 million deaths annually . Furthermore, the decline in childhood vaccinations—the largest in 30 years—leaves millions of children at risk from preventable diseases . The Path Forward To reach the 2030 targets, countries must prioritize Universal Health Coverage, increase investment in resilient health systems, and address disparities in access, particularly for vulnerable populations and those in low-income regions
