Thai Health Literacy Association(THLA) (2026-05-19)
Summary of Health Literate Workplace (HLW) Standards A Health Literate Workplace (HLW) is defined as an organization or factory where health literacy is considered the responsibility of everyone . It is an environment that prioritizes effective systems, processes, and services to ensure all personnel—regardless of their background—can access, understand, and use health information to make safe decisions, reduce work-related risks, and embrace a "Wellness" lifestyle . 1. Strategic Purpose as a "Directing Tool" The HLW criteria serve as a Directing Tool for executives and management teams . It provides a roadmap for driving organizational change, helping leaders identify "Opportunities for Improvement" (OFI) and bridge performance gaps . The ultimate goal is to improve employee health, reduce organizational healthcare costs, and increase overall productivity . 2. The Five Assessment Categories The certification framework for 2021 is organized into five core categories: Leadership and Governance: Management must integrate health literacy into the organization's mission, strategic plans, and operational structures . This includes ensuring equity and safety for all employees . Effective Communication: Organizations must use diverse methods (verbal, written, and digital) to ensure health information is understood across all units . This involves using plain language and providing translations for complex medical terms . Workforce Development: Employees are prepared to become "Health Literacy Coaches" . The organization continuously monitors staff development and responds to the specific health literacy needs of different employee groups . Measurement, Analysis, and Knowledge Management (KM): Data regarding employee health risks and needs are used to design services and drive innovation . HL Process Development: Focuses on making health information easy to navigate (e.g., clear signage/maps), providing tailored key messages, and managing high-risk situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic . 3. Evidence-Based Communication Techniques The standard emphasizes specific tools to ensure mutual understanding between the organization and its staff: Teach-back: A technique where employees explain health instructions in their own words to confirm they have understood correctly . Ask Me 3: Encourages employees to ask three critical questions: What is my main problem? What do I need to do? Why is it important? . Chunk and Check: Breaking large amounts of information into small segments and checking understanding before moving to the next part . 4. Certification Levels and Outcomes Organizations are certified at three progressive levels: Initiative (Functional HL): Basic compliance with policies and the establishment of initial support systems . Advance (Interactive HL): Characterized by cross-organizational teamwork, improved health outcomes, and the emergence of a health-literate culture . Award (Critical HL): The highest level, where the organization acts as a learning center, influences social policy, and has a workforce capable of analyzing the social determinants of health to drive broader change
